A steel pommel securely holds the handle and the guard on the blade. The pommel has incisions on the outer surface for more convenient manual tightening the nut, preventing slipping on a smooth surface. Also, there is an open end cross hole for a screw driver, with which it is possible, if needed, to apply additional efforts when tightening to hold the guard more tightly between the handle and the blade.
A middle weight pommel ensures excellent counterweight for weapon, which is especially important for fencers who prefer a “nut” grip to enlarge the weapon reach radius. The heavier is the pommel, the closer the balance point will be to the hand and the easier it will be to control the tip, but, at this, the overall weight of the weapon will be bigger, making it more complicated to control the weapon on the whole and exhausting the fencer quicker. Weight of the foil pommel is selected for the optimum balance between the total weight of the weapon and its controllability.
